This interview is part of a project called Luxury Inception, see below to learn more about the project.
Founded in 1954, the Comité Colbert gathers French luxury houses and several cultural institutions. They work together to promote French art de vivre at an international level.
The Comité Colbert has a membership of 81 luxury houses that vary in size and age: some were created centuries ago, others more recently. Among the most famous ones you can find hotels and restaurants such as the Ritz, George V , Alain Ducasse at Plaza Athénée, jewelry, fashion and cosmetic luxury brands like Cartier, Guerlain, Chanel, Dior, Hermès, Louis Vuitton and many others. They all share the Colbert values as well as the desire to represent France's high-end image abroad.
The members are coopted - and vote annually to coopt each other - on the basis of five criteria: international ambition and strong cultural identity, high quality standards, creativity, imagination and ethical conduct.
Elisabeth Ponsolle des Portes, CEO of the Comité Colbert, accepted to give Nebulas Sight Lab her answers to our Luxury Inception Interview.

Here is what she has to say about luxury.
How do you perceive luxury, as a concrete object or an abstract concept? How do you or the Comité Colbert would define luxury?
The Comité Colbert would shy from giving a definition of luxury, for we believe that it belongs to one’s intimate creed. But it represents for each one of us an aspiration towards what is rare, precious, and exceptional – what constitutes the salt of life…and the French “art de vivre”.
What item would you be wiling to spend the majority of your fortune and time?
On a very personal level, luxury is to me the capacity to access all forms of creation: literature, painting, music… but it is also to take a slumber in complete silence on a sun-bathed beach!
What are you passionate about besides your profession (alter ego)?
The answer to the question is already given above but I would add travel and discoveries!
About The Luxury Inception project :
What does luxury mean ? What would a new vision of luxury be? These 2 intriguing questions cannot be answered in solely a few words neither do they have a unique answer.
We created The Luxury Inception Interviews to open the discussion and debate and to see if among all the subjective answers we get we can imagine a new definition of luxury.
We invited interviewees from various geographical regions, upbringings, educational backgrounds, ethnic groups, cultural cultivation and industries to experiment a new vision of luxury. Some of them are well-known to the public, some of them are well-respected in their fields and some of them are in the ascendence in reaching the next great accomplishment. Despite of the diversity of our selective guest interviewees, they share one thing in common - not only are they brilliant minds in the current globalized world but they are constantly in search for a profound comprehension of the world.
We are just excited as you are to find out what is going to come out from these precious testaments once we’ll attempt to decipher luxury in a rather different angle.
Please stay tuned, the future of luxury is unlocking right here.
